Etymology: Diplodus: Greek, diploos = twice + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335).

Issue on validity of subspecies: subspecies considered as valid in FB, synonymized with the species Diplodus sargus (Linnaeus, 1758) in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. Mar. 2011: Ref. 86697). Please send references, or more studies are needed.

Eastern Atlantic: Strait of Gibraltar to Cape Verde, Canary Islands, but absent from Cape Verde; northwards to the Bay of Biscay.
Forms schools. Inhabits rocky bottoms down to depths of about 150 m, but especially abundant in the surf zone; young occur in Zostera seagrass beds. Prefers to feed on small crustaceans and mollusks; also takes seaweeds and corals (Ref. 3688).
