Has a similar pattern to that of A. rainfordi, but is bluish-black rather than green, with yellow longitudinal stripes and a chain of ocelli from the base of the second dorsal fin to the upper caudal rays (Ref.1602 ); characterized by having elongate and filamentous first two dorsal spines in adult; united pelvic fins, frenum present; rounded caudal fin, usually slightly shorter than HL; longitudinal scale series 65-70; ctenoid body scales, becoming cycloid anterior to posterior part of first dorsal fin; head scaleless; depth of body 4.6-5.0 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Indo-West Pacific: Red Sea, Aldabra, Seychelles, Ryukyu Islands, Yaeyama Islands; Palau, Truk, and Pohnpei in Micronesia.
Inhabits sheltered bays and inner reefs on fine rubble shaded by large living corals (Ref. 48637). Occurs solitarily, hovering a short distance above sandy bottoms of reef bases. Stomach contents of one specimen comprise of filamentous algae, harpacticoid copepods, ostracods, amphipods, and nematodes (Ref. 9360).
