Etymology: brachysoma: Named after a leopard seal Hydrurga leptonyx, phoke in Greek means seal (Ref. 11892).

Marine; pelagic-oceanic; depth range 0 - 429 m (Ref. 11892), usually 0 - 30 m. Polar, preferred ?; 61°S - 79°S
Southern Ocean: Ross Sea, Davis Sea, Wilhelm II Coast, north of Edward VII and west coast of Antarctic Peninsula.

A cryopelagic species associated with the underside of ice. Feeds on copepods and euphausiids.
