Africa: endemic to Lake Mweru (Ref. 26626). Reports from the lower Congo rapids (Ref. 82335), Lindi (Ref. 82324), Wagenia Falls (Ref. 82324, 106245) and Lualaba (82324) are either unconfirmed and questionable, or belong to other species (Ref. 26626, 106290). Reports from the Kalungwishi and Luongo (Lake Mweru basin, Zambia) refer to other species (Ref. 26626).

Vertebrae: 31 - 32. Cheek squamation, variable, a scaleless area anteroventrally; chest squamation, minute and deeply embedded scales, sometimes with bilaterally scaleless area (Ref. 28906). Nape-nuchal scales visible, larger than those of found on the ventral surface of the belly (Ref. 26626).
