Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes) > Perciformes
(Perch-likes) > Cichlidae
(Cichlids) > Pseudocrenilabrinae
Etymology: Haplochromis: Greek, Haploos = single + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335).
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Freshwater; benthopelagic. Tropical; 0°S - 1°S
Africa: Lake George and Kazinga channel, probably in Lake Edward. Few information is available for this species probably because in the field it is easily confused with Haplochromis nigripinnis and Haplochromis elegans (Ref. 558).
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 7.7 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 4983)
Inhabits areas close to papyrus fringes of islands or more exposed areas offshore of islands over mud bottoms (Ref. 4983). Feeds on dipteran larvae and pupae. The absence of phytoplankton or sand grains in the stomach of the specimens which were examined suggest that the fish were feeding away from the bottom (Ref. 558).
