Etymology: Scorpaenodes: Latin, scorpaena = a kind of fish, 1706 + Greek oides = similar to (Ref. 45335); bathycolus: Name from Greek, 'bathy' meaning depth, and Latin, 'colus' for dwelling in, referring to the deep reef habitat of the species.
