Etymology: Poecilia: Greek, poikilos = with a lot of colours (Ref. 45335); hondurensis: This species was named hondurensis in the
manuscript notes of Miller and Cruz after carefully delimitation of its range. I have retained this name in honor of both discoverers.

Poecilia hondurensis is distinguished from all other species of Poecilia that have an inner row of tricuspid teeth in each jaw by the absence of a spinal hook on gonopodial ray 5 and an extremely reduced membranous hook on gonopodial ray 3 (Ref. 87955).
