Non-breeding individuals observed both inshore and in benthic deepwater region; move solitarily and appear to permanently scan environment for prey while swimming without a hast and while rarely being motionless; pairs excavate large nest-pits under branches or logs and breed exclusively in shallow inshore region above 2 m; probably predator of small fish, mostly juvenile cichlids (Ref. 85854).
