Etymology: Nannocharax: Latin, nannus = small + Greek, charax = a marine fish without identification (Ref. 45335);  signifer: From the Latin word signifer, meaning color sergeant or standrad bearer, in referece to the unusual red-orange color on the dorsal fin.

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal soft rays (total): 12-14; Anal soft rays: 10 - 11; Vertebrae: 38 - 39. Distinguished from all its congeners in West Africa by the red-orange coloration of the anterior part of dorsal fin. Differs further by the combination of the following characters: absence of continuous black band along the flank; multiple x-shaped body color pattern extending on the lower half of the flank; 46-48 scales (usually 47) along the lateral line; and 4-5 scales between anus and anal-fin origin (Ref. 83417).

Found in a narrow forest stream with dense vegetation on its banks and with bottom substrate of mud, sand, leaves, roots and drift wood, where it was collected between the roots of the overhanging bank; also occurs in a larger stream with only spare vegetation in the form of small bushes and solitary trees and with bottom substrate consisting mainly of sand and gravel (Ref. 83417).
