Etymology: Clupisoma: Latin, clupea = sardine, derived from Clupeus = shield; doubtless a reference to the sacles covering the body of the fish + Greek, soma = body (Ref. 45335); nujiangense: Specific name refers to the type locality Nu Jiang (Chinese name for Salween River) and the suffix agrees in gender with the generic name.. Morphology | Morphometrics
Dorsal
spines
(total): 2;
Dorsal
soft rays
(total): 7. Distinguished by the following combination of characters: abdominal keel reaching from vicinity of posterior edge of pectoral-fin base to vertical through anus; adipose fin present; 47-57 branched anal-fin rays; nasal barbel extending past posterior edge of orbit; maxillary barbel reaching midpoint of pelvic fin; medial mental barbel extending beyond level of pectoral-spine origin; lateral mental barbel not reaching posterior margin of opercle; pectoral-fin spine reaching or surpassing vertical through pelvic-fin origin; dorsal-fin origin posterior of midpoint of distance between pectoral and pelvic-fin origins; pelvic-fin origin just posterior of level of posterior insertion of dorsal fin; pelvic fin extending to anal-fin origin; 14-20 gill rakers; predorsal length 25.5-31.0% SL; and body depth at anus usually greater than body depth at dorsal-fin origin (Ref. 56056).
Occur in rivers with silty and slow to medium flowing water over mixed substratum ranging from sand to boulders (Ref. 56056). Oviparous, eggs are unguarded (Ref. 205).
