Etymology: Bryconamericus: Greek, bryko = to bite + America, latinized (Ref. 45335);  carlosi: Named for Carlos Román-Valencia, in appreciation for his patience and early assistance during field work.

Vertebrae: 33. Diagnosed from all other species of the genus Bryconamericus by its low number of vertebrae 33, completely ossified pterotic, a bent end of the pelvic bone, and nasal bones absent (Ref. 56110).
