Etymology: Nannobrachium: Latin, nannus = small + Latin, brachium = the upper arm from the shoulder to the elbow; 1731 (Ref. 45335);  gibbsi: Named after the late Dr. Robert H. Gibbs, Jr. of the Smithsonian Institution, in honor of his many contributions to the understanding of open-ocean midwater ichthyology (Ref. 36121).
