North America: Clear Lake; Russian, Sacramento-San Joaquin, and Pajaro-Salinas River drainages in California, USA.
Adults inhabit mud to gravel-bottomed pools and runs of small to large, low-elevation rivers and lakes. Usually occurs near emergent aquatic plants or overhanging banks. Rarely enters brackish water (Ref. 5723). Viviparous, female carries the developing young (Ref. 205).
