Western Atlantic: Bermuda, New Jersey and northern Gulf of Mexico in USA to southeastern Brazil; absent from Bahamas. Eastern Central Pacific: coastal lagoons and tidal flats of Sonora, Sinaloa and Nayarit, Mexico (Ref. 27659).

About 6 faint lines radiate from eye. 2 widely separated patches of papillae in central part of sucking disk (Ref. 26938).

Inhabits grassy and rocky shallow areas and around pilings. Has been reared in captivity (Ref. 35420). Usually found in water <1m deep but sometimes to depths of 33 m (Ref. 26938).
