This species is distinguished by the following characters: cephalic sensory-canal pore system without the IT pore only (pattern 2); all pectoral rays unbranched; dorsal/anal-fin formula 8-9/7-8 (usually 9/8 in the Pacific); fifth pelvic-fin ray 5-10% of fourth ray; preural centrum with a round dark spot, not wedge-shaped; caudal fin with 3-4 dark wavy vertical lines (Ref. 107299).
Inhabits dead algal-covered reef in 3-15 m (Ref. 90102).
