Etymology: Petrotilapia: Latin,petra = stone + Bechuana, African native thiape = fish (Ref. 45335).

Africa: Endemic to Lake Malawi. Widespread south of Ruarwe on the western side of the lake and as far north as Makanjila on the eastern side.
