Etymology: Syngnathus: Greek, syn, symphysis = grown together + Greek, gnathos = jaw (Ref. 45335).

Europe: Black Sea, Sea of Azov and Sea of Marmara. Asia: Turkey.
Feeds mainly on copepods, preferably Acartia clausi, Pseudocalanus elongatus, Oithona nana, and Pseudocalanus parvus (Ref. 10613). Ovoviviparous (Ref. 205). The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail (Ref. 205).
