Marine; brackish; pelagic-neritic. Subtropical, preferred ?
Northwest Pacific: Japan (except northern Hokkaido) through the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan, and coasts from Shanghai to Peihar and Hainan Island. Might occur as a rare visitor to the northern extreme of the Western Central Pacific.

Inhabit inlet waters and estuaries of rivers. Oviparous, eggs are pelagic and non-adhesive (Ref. 205). Used as food fish in Japan.
