Sound production: yes, active sound production
Type of sound produced: knocks, thumps (& croaks)
Sound production organ: unspecified but probably swim bladder with drumming muscles in males only & pharyngeal teeth in close proximity to swim bladder in both sexes
Sonic mechanism: unspecified, but probably similar to Cynoscion regalis: males only: vibration of swim bladder by contraction of associated "drumming" muscles, high-pitched clucking in both sexes produced by stridulation of pharyngeal teeth amplified by swim bladder
Behavioural context: under duress (manual & electric stimulation)
Reference: Fish, M.P. and W.H. Mowbray, 1970
Remarks: no sex data available, but lack of croaking in recording suggests female specimen only, since drumming muscles are limited to males in morphologically related sciaenids.Recorded with highpass filter: 60 Hz. Recording amplifed by 6 dB
