Short description
Dorsal spines (total): 16 - 18; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7 - 9; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 6 - 7. Diagnosis: body elongate, its depth 30.0-34.1% of standard length; head length 29.0-33.0% of standard length; teeth conical, upper jaw with 2, lower jaw with 3 tooth rows; dorsal fin with 2-4 oval spots posteriorly and a series of horizontal lines anteriorly (Ref. 53405). Description: snout rounded, dorsally convex; pharyngeal teeth bicuspid; no micro-gillrakers; scales cycloid; caudal fin rounded (Ref. 53405). Coloration: in live: males: upper part of body olivaceous-brown, lower part lighter, belly tinged with pale yellow; opercular region olivaceous-brown dorsally and light golden ventrally, with orange band below eye and metallic-black spot bordered anteriorly and posteriorly by bright green bands; lips dark yellow; dorsal fin black-edged, with light yellow submarginal band, its filamentous tip red-edged; 2-4 black, orange-edged, oval spots on upper part and series of olivaceous-brown horizontal bands on anterior part of dorsal fin; caudal fin dark orange above, with 5-12, usually 6-7, black oval spots; lower part of fin caudal black-edged, with light blue submarginal band and series of olivaceous-brown vertical bars; pectoral fins light yellow, pelvics light blue, edged anteriorly by broad black band and posteriorly by narrow black band; anal fin violet and black-edged (Ref. 53405). Females: upper part of body olivaceous-brown, with darker band running from eye to caudal peduncle; anterior part of head with 2 dark brown lateral bands; lower part of body whitish to light olivaceous-brown with light greenish tinge on belly; opercular region olivaceous-brown dorsally and yellow-tinged light green ventrally, bearing a golden-orange horizontal band just below eye; lips golden; dorsal fin golden, except for narrow, black distal edge and 2 round spots anteriorly; caudal fin golden dorsally, with 1-3 back spots, ventrally transparent, except for some traces of golden spots; pectoral fins transparent; pelvics light green and anal fin violet, both black-edged (Ref. 53406).
