Etymology: Parananochromis: Greek, para = the side of + Latin, nannus = small + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335);  brevirostris: From the Latin brevis, short and rostrum, beak or snout, in reference to the short, rounded snout of the species (Ref. 50579).

Africa: Ivindo and Ogowe drainages in Gabon (Ref. 50579, 81260, 97361). Reports from the Ntem River (Ref. 50579, 81260) are misidentifications for Parananochromis elobatus (Ref. 97361).

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 14 - 16; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8-10; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 6 - 8. Diagnosis: lachrymal plus three tubular infraorbitals (Ref. 81260). Weakly developed (Ref. 81260) or absent (Ref. 50579) "pharyngeal hanging pad" on pharynx roof. Cheek naked or with a single scale row under eye (Ref. 81260). Anterior chest naked (Ref. 50579, 81260). 1-3 scales between base of pectoral and pelvic fins; well-developed dorsal fin lappets (Ref. 81260).
