Etymology: Nannobrachium: Latin, nannus = small + Latin, brachium = the upper arm from the shoulder to the elbow; 1731 (Ref. 45335);  hawaiiensis: Named after the Hawaiian Islands where this species is abundant in the surrounding midwaters (Ref. 36121).

Taggstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt): 0; Mjukstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt): 13-16; Taggstrålar i analfenan 0; Mjukstrålar i analfenan: 15 - 19; Ryggkotor: 34 - 35. 11-13 AO photophores; 8.5-10 tooth patches on the lower limb of the second gill arch; 32-34 lateral line organs (Ref. 36121). Pectoral fins completely lacking in juvenile, subadult, and adult stages, apparently lost at about time of postlarval transformation; pectoral fin rays present buried in the skin in small juveniles (Ref. 36121).
