Etymology: Lampanyctus: Greek, lampas, -ados = torch + Greek, nykte = night (Ref. 45335);  hawaiiensis: Named after the Hawaiian Islands where this species is abundant in the surrounding midwaters (Ref. 36121).

Rückenflossenstacheln (insgesamt): 0; Rückenflossenweichstrahlen (insgesamt): 13-16; Afterflossenstacheln 0; Afterflossenweichstrahlen: 15 - 19; Wirbelzahl: 34 - 35. 11-13 AO photophores; 8.5-10 tooth patches on the lower limb of the second gill arch; 32-34 lateral line organs (Ref. 36121). Pectoral fins completely lacking in juvenile, subadult, and adult stages, apparently lost at about time of postlarval transformation; pectoral fin rays present buried in the skin in small juveniles (Ref. 36121).
