Short description
Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total): 6; Anal soft rays: 13 - 15; Vertebrae: 40. Can be differentiated from all other Indochinese congeners (except for Amblyceps variegatum) in possessing posterior edge of adipose fin pointed; length of adipose fin base 25.6-33.5% SL; dorsal to adipose distance 12.1-21.6% SL; depth of caudal peduncle 13.2-15.9% SL; body depth at anus 12.8-15.1% SL; eyes small, dorsolaterally situated and subcutaneous, diameter 5.1-8% HL; vertebrae 20; and forked caudal fin. The species differs from A. variegatum in having a uniform brown body (versus body with mottled pattern of small irregular dark brownish-grey patches); longer adipose-fin base (versus 19.9-22.8) and a shorter dorsal to adipose distance (versus 23.8-26.7) and from A. foratum in having a deeper caudal peduncle (versus 10.1-13.5) (Ref. 37785). Caudal fin lobes somewhat rounded posteriorly, with the upper lobe longer than lower. Mouth and gape terminal with lower jaw slightly longer than upper and weakly projecting forwards; lips fleshy and slightly fimbriated, with well-developed rictal fold below anterior border of eye, consisting of large and membranous upper lobe joined at corner of mouth with lower lobe (Ref. 37785).
