Asia: Mekong, Irrawaddy, Salween, Red River and Nanpangjiang basins (Ref. 43281). Introduced in Kazakhstan where it is now abundant; established in lower Kuban drainage; spreading in Azov basin, discovered in River Obitochnaya, Ukraine in 2003 (Ref. 59043).
Occurs in upper and middle layers of shallow coastal waters in Fuxian Lake, China (Ref. 26717). Reported to occur in swamps, marshes, rice fields, backwaters, stream stretches with stagnant water and dense vegetation (Ref. 59043). Feeds mainly on filamentous algae and zooplankton (Ref. 26717).
