Short description
Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 15 - 19. Body height 3.45-3.95 times in standard length (Ref. 42032). Head length 3.6-4 times in standard length (Ref. 42032). Lateral line always complete (Ref. 2880). Gill rakers in first ceratobranch (Ref. 2880). Sexual dimorphism in male adults; anal fins curved instead of pointed (Ref. 2880). Juveniles without black spot at tip of dorsal fin (Ref. 2880). Body silvery with glossary lateral band (Ref. 2880). Caudal ruby-rose tint (Ref. 2880).
Biology
    Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)
Inhabits fringing vegetation of rivers and lakes, feeding on zooplankton, beetles and other insects (Ref. 28714). Often reported in West Africa under name of M. acutidens. Note that all species typical of Zambezi and Congo have a second row of 2 mandibular polycuspid teeth and conical like those of Sudanian basins.
