Short description
Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 15 - 23. Humeral spot. Caudal peduncle stripe extending to middle rays of caudal. Body color silvery with dorsal region greenish and ventral part white. Males: paired fins red-violet, terminal filaments of pelvic fins may also be red-violet, bright red spot under eye. Females: fins pale orange, each caudal lobe with yellowish spot, spot under eye orange. Parietal fontanelle also in adults. Males: filamentous dorsal and anal fins, body depth growth faster in mature males.
Biology
    Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)
Generally found in the upper and lower reaches of big rivers and also in estuarine zones of mixohaline waters. The only Brycinus species to penetrate small rivers and streams (Ref. 2880). Aquarium keeping: in groups of 5 or more individuals; minimum aquarium size 100 cm (Ref. 51150).
