Short description

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 6; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 6. Bony head. Nasal openings: 1) tubules, 2) semi-circle behind tubules. Narrow gill opening. Dorsal and anal with 2 simple and 4 branched rays. Skeletal formula: 3.5/35-38/4.5:3.5:16 sexual dimorphism at 210 cm TL: males with 4 large tubercles around eye and spinules on caudal peduncle. Paired fins tinted with red.

Swim bladder functions as lungs, which permit this species to survive in unoxygenated waters. Mouth can be projected as a small trunk.
