Pacific, Indian and Atlantic: from tropical to subarctic waters. Not found in the Mediterranean Sea. Circum-Antarctic on the margin of the Southern Ocean, mostly in sub-Antarctic water (Ref. 5189). South China Sea and East China Sea (Ref.74511).

Short description

Dorsal spines (total): 3; Dorsal soft rays (total): 114; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 8 - 11; Vertebrae: 26 - 29. Caudal shallowly forked; pectorals long, slender, longer than head (Ref. 6885). Black in color (Ref. 6885). Branchiostegal rays: 8 (Ref. 36655). Body robust not angular, serrated crest on top of head. Largest raker on lower 4th gill arch. Scales on body and operculum mostly missing (Ref. 37108).

Found below 750 m during the day, shallower at night (Ref. 36655); minimum depth of occurrence is 400 m upon reaching about 5 cm length (Ref. 54657; 82347). Oviparous, with planktonic eggs and larvae (Ref. 36655). Adults feed on small crustaceans (Ref. 6885). There is significant morphological variation between populations (Ref. 4241).
