Dorsal spines (total): 12 - 13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 16 - 20; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 17 - 21. Caudal fin with 9 to 14 soft rays (Ref. 40476).
Biology
    Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)
Occurs in rivers and brooks (Ref. 4342), with relatively shallow water as well as in low altitude lakes (Ref. 30578). Feeds on small benthic organisms. Oviparous (Ref. 205). The reproductive period lasts from April until June. Spawns in nests found among or underneath stones. Eggs are guarded by the male. Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref. 205). A short-lived species which is threatened due to pollution, habitat destruction and water abstraction (Ref. 26100).
