Short description
Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 7. Differs from other Upeneus with 7-spined dorsal fin in generally having14 pectoral fin rays; 7 + 20 gill rakers; 29 + 2 lateral line scales; no teeth on ectopterygoid (Ref. 43139). Bluish to greenish grey, shading to silvery white ventrally, each scale dorsally and on side of body with a red to brown blotch; a red bar below eye always present; barbels white to yellow; upper lobe of caudal fin of adults with five or six transverse reddish brown bands; ventral border of lower lobe white with seven to ten short transverse reddish black bands, the rest of the lobe dark reddish brown with a few white flecks; dorsal, anal and pelvic fins with alternating orangish brown and white bands or rows of spots (the white mainly on rays) (Ref. 11441).
