Etymology: Herichthys: Greek, eri = very, a lot + Greek, ichthys = fish (Ref. 45335);  cyanoguttatus: Cichlasoma, Greek meaning body of a wrasse (a similar type of fish); cyanoguttatum Greek for blue-spotted (Ref. 79012).

North America: originally restricted to the lower Rio Grande drainage in Texas, USA and south to northeastern Mexico. Introduced on Edwards Plateau of central Texas and central peninsular Florida, USA, and Verde River basin (La Media Luna region), Mexico (Ref. 36377).
