Western Atlantic: Nova Scotia, Canada and northern Gulf of Mexico to Puerto Rico (Ref. 7251). Highly migratory species, Annex I of the 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea (Ref. 26139).

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 33 - 38; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 27 - 30. Grey or silvery in color, with coppery reflections (Ref. 4388).

Generally oceanic and presumably epipelagic. Young are present in all seasons (Ref. 6697). Flesh considered very good (Ref. 3576).
