Distribution
Southeast Atlantic: Bosluisbaai, Torra Bay and Swakopmund or Walvis Bay, northwest Namibia to Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Western Atlantic: Cape Cod, USA to the Gulf of Mexico. Western Indian Ocean: Beira, Mozambique to Transkei, South Africa (Ref. 3876, 12484). Records from Guinea-Bissau as Tachysurus feliceps and from Guinea as Arius feliceps are erroneous. Reported from Madagascar (Ref. 13333).

Short description
Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 17 - 21. Brown to greyish or greenish brown dorsally, whitish on sides and ventrally; midline of abdomen whitish and never pigmented.
Biology
    Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)
Generally found in large shoals on muddy bottoms in turbid waters, usually on the coastline and estuaries. Also found in rivers (Ref. 3976). Feeds on crayfish, small fish, and crabs (Ref. 27121). Considered a nuisance of shore and ski-boat anglers in southern Africa as little else is caught (Ref. 12484). Spines are poisonous and wounds should be treated immediately. Marketed smoked (Ref. 36731).
