Black Sea drainage: lower reaches of the Dniester; Yushnyi Bug; middle course (Kiev and further upstream: Teterev River, basin of the Seim) and lower reaches of the Dnieper; rivers Obitochnaya and Berda emptying into the Sea of Azov; delta of the Kuban (Talgir system); Western Transcaucasia.

Common in basins with stagnant water or slow currents (Ref. 1441). Feed mainly on insects and their larvae, also plankton, benthic invertebrates and algae (Ref. 59043).
