Distribution
Africa: Widely distributed in the Middle and Upper Congo River. Also known from Chad, Senegal, Gambia, Volta, Niger basins as well as in the Ouémé and Mono Rivers and other coastal basins (Ref. 2940).

Short description
Dorsal soft rays (total): 12 - 13; Anal soft rays: 8; Vertebrae: 29 - 31. Prominent snout with tubercles. Short barbels. Concave dorsal fin in adults, allometric growth, longest ray grows proportionally faster than head length. Gill rakers on 1st branchial arch. Back blackish or greenish gray, whitish belly. Dark longitudinal band in middle of flanks from opercle to end of caudal peduncle, surrounded by light yellow band in young, fins tinted with pink. Dorsal: 3 simple, 9-10 branched. Anal: 3 simple, 5 branched.

Found in stony river beds and in mountain pools formed by small brooks (Ref. 4906). Maximum TL was recorded at 51.5 cm (Ref. 12456).
