Short description
Dorsal soft rays (total): 10 - 13; Anal soft rays: 8. Slightly convex dorsal profile. Unequal barbels (anterior - reaching posterior 1/2 of eyes, posterior - extending to opercle). Complete lateral line, slightly dipping below dorsal fin. 3-4 spots on median body: 1) 7th scale of lateral line; 2) below vertical of last dorsal ray; 3) above anal; 4) caudal peduncle. Supplementary spots, fusion of spots to form longitudinal band joining of 1st or 3rd spots, eye. Dorsal and pectorals, yellowish. Dorsal and Anal with 3 simple rays. Color varies according. to basin of origin. Upper Niger - 3 elongated black spots more or less confluent in black longitudinal band esp. on caudal region. In other basins, 4 spots well separated and aligned on median body.
