Short description

Dorsal soft rays (total): 13; Anal soft rays: 8. Polymorphic. Lips not well developed in Liberian populations. Guinean population with chin lobe. Barbel well developed but variable length according to basins. Dorsal fins short, last simple ray not exceeding head length, base ossified forming spine whose length is always less than head length. External border of dorsal straight, sometimes slightly concave. Gill rakers on 1st branchial arch. Dorsal: 4 simple, 9 branched. Anal: 3 simple, 5 branched.

Maximum TL was recorded at 29 cm (Ref. 2801).
