Africa: Gambia, Senegal, upper Niger, Sassandra and Volta basins. Known from all great Sudanian basins and in the basins of the north-Guinean zones. Absent in zones of coastal forests (Ref. 2915).

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 28 - 38. Dorsal origin behind anal fin origin; ratio between base of dorsal and base of anal = 0.7-0.9 body depth 3.1-4.6 x SL; depth of peduncle 2.0-3.6 x of its length.

Affinities: M. brucii and M. mento.
