Etymology: Sciaenochromis: Greek, skiaina, skion = a fish, red mullet + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); ahli: Named after Dr. Ernst Ahl, Zoological Museum of the Humboldt University, Berlin who described this species as H. serranoides (Ref. 40899).

Dorsale stekels (totaal): 16 - 17; Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal): 9-11; Anale stekels 3; Anale zachte stralen: 9 - 10.

Inhabits several habitats where rocks are found; usually found in caves and cracks of the biotope; feeds on small fishes, mainly small mbuna that live among the rocks (Ref. 5595). Oviparous (Ref. 205).
