Short description
Body oblong and compressed; snout widely rounded; lower branch of first gill arch with 13 to 18 gill rakers; ventral area of chest up to origin of pelvic fins scaleless; lateral line arched anteriorly, with 23 to 40 strong scutes in the straight area; tongue, palate, and floor of mouth white or cream colored; rest of mouth blue black; body charcoal or black dorsal, lighter ventrally, with about 6 narrow, dark, vertical bars separated by lighter spaces (Ref. 55763).

A pelagic and demersal species found in sandy bottoms at the foot of the edge of the outer reefs, continental coasts and around islands (Ref. 9283). Solitary or forming small schools (Ref. 30573). Mainly nocturnal (Ref. 4887). Marketed fresh and salted or dried (Ref. 9283).
