Pacific Ocean: Kermadec Islands, Philippines, Darwin Seamount in central Pacific, Tasman Sea, Nazca Ridge. Indian Ocean: off Socotra Island and Western Australian Ridge. Subtropical and tropical Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.

الأشواك الظهرية (المجموع): 2; شوكة شرجية 0. Head large, completely scaled except for the exposed posterior end of the preopercle and gill membranes. Snout short, bluntly pointed. No suborbital ridge developed; scales spinules numerous, small, sharp, conical, in irregularly divergent to roughly quincunx pattern. Pyloric caeca 12 to 16. Overall color is brown or grayish brown; fins somewhat darker.
Feeds on cephalopods, at least at larger sizes.
