Africa: Senegal to Cameroon, apparently in both lower and upper reaches of rivers, but the latter only confirmed in the case of the Niger; also the man-made lakes Kainji (Nigeria) and Volta (Ghana).

Short description
Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12 - 18; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 17 - 21. Small, slender fishes, easily mistaken for the juveniles of Pellonula. Pre-pelvic scutes minute, 4 to 10, without arms, supporting a low membranous keel, post-pelvic scutes similar, the keel more apparent. Pelvic fin insertion well before dorsal fin; anal fin beginning under dorsal fin base. Scales apparently absent except near tail. Jaws about equal, with small teeth.
Biology
    Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)
Occurs in rivers but also in man-made lakes. Schools in open shallow waters, rising to about 30 cm at night in Lake Volta. Feeds on plankton, especially cladocerans.
