Short description
Dorsal soft rays (total): 80 - 83; Anal soft rays: 59 - 64. First dorsal spine modified into a "fishing rod and lure" (illicium and esca) similar to structure found in frogfishes (Ref. 37816). Body depth 1.7 to 1.9 times in SL. Interorbital width in head length in specimens larger than about 60 mm SL 3.7 to 5.8 in males, 5.8 to 9 times in females. First dorsal-fin ray with distinct membranous structure at tip (Ref 42535).

Found on pale sandy substrates in clearwater coastal bays to outer reef lagoons and sandy gutters on reef flats. Often crawls over low stony reef (Ref. 48637). Esca in Waves illicium and esca back and forth near mouth to attract prey. Esca resembles a small crustacean, possibly a small hippolytid shrimp. Shows sexual dimorphism in width of the interorbital origin, wider in males than females. Most frequently collected by divers.
