Indian Ocean: known only from Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and the Bay of Bengal, but probably widespread in the tropical region. This species has been frequently confused with other large red snappers such as Lutjanus malabaricus and Lutjanus sanguineus.

Taggstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt): 10 - 11; Mjukstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt): 13-14; Taggstrålar i analfenan 3; Mjukstrålar i analfenan: 9. Dorsal profile of head steeply sloped. Preorbital bone relatively broad, its width greater than eye diameter. Preopercular notch and knob poorly developed. Scale rows on back rising obliquely above lateral line. Color is red or reddish-orange, sometimes with an indistinct saddle-like black blotch on the caudal peduncle behind the dorsal fin. Median fins are reddish, sometimes with a yellow suffusion or narrow brown or black borders; pelvic fins are red; pectoral fins yellow.
