Short description
Dorsal spines (total): 5 - 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9 - 10; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 12 - 13. The distal end of upper jaw extending slightly backward beyond vertical through anterior border of orbit. The anus is 2 to 4 scales in front of the pelvic fin tips, rarely more than 3 scales (Ref. 9760).
Biology
    Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)
Inhabits shallow coastal waters (Ref. 3302). Occurs in schools along calm shorelines (Ref. 37816). Important as forage food species to larger commercial fish and as bait fish (Ref. 3302).
