Africa: East coast rivers from Zambezi system south to Mkuze in Natal. Considered to be closely related to or the same species as the Barotse barb, Barbus barotseensis.

Short description

Dorsal spines (total): 3; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7 - 8; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 5. Body slender; the third simple ray of the dorsal is slender and flexible.

Inhabits small streams and the larger river systems with or without aquatic weeds (Ref. 13337). Favors slow-flowing streams with vegetation (Ref. 7248). Forms shoals and undertakes seasonal movements up tributaries and onto floodplains (Ref. 13337).
