Short description
Dorsal spines (total): 2832; Vertebrae: 93. No pre-opercular spines; pre-orbital spine almost always present (Ref. 57415). Origin of first dorsal spine situated anterior to, or below, the posterior edge of the pectoral fin (Ref. 57415). Distance from the anterior border of the snout to the last externally visible dorsal spine, between 50,0 and 57,6% of standard length, shorter than distance from the anterior border of the snout to the last externally visible anal spine, between 54,2 and 62,0% of standard length; both decreasing in percentages with increasing size (Ref. 57415). Post-anal length, between 43,5 and 51,0% of standard length, shorter than pre-anal length, between 48,3 and 55,1% of standard length (Ref. 57415). Light brown overall background colour (Ref. 57415). The lateral sides are characterized by a more or less pronounced dark brown battlement pattern, which forms a well delimited edge between the dark lateral sides and the lighter colour dorsal sides and dorsal midline; dorsal midline often with a series of dark brown saddle-like blotches (Ref. 57415). The ventral side of head, belly and abdomen is white, yellowish of colour but not so well delimited from the lower sides (Ref. 57415). On the lower sides irregularly shaped, white, yellowish spots are present (Ref. 57415). Background colour of the dorsal, caudal and anal fins white, transparent, mottled scarcely with small, round, brown spots; dorsal and anal fin base with a series of dark brown, round spots partially situated, respectively, on the dorsal and ventral part of the tail; on the more distal part of the dorsal and anal fins additional small dark brown spots can be observed; the pectoral fins are white, yellowish of overall background colour with small light brown spots and a brown base (Ref. 57415). Colour pattern changes with size, being the darkening of the unpaired fins, are to be noted (Ref. 57415). Nevertheless, the outermost margin of the dorsal, caudal and anal fins always remains white (Ref. 57415).
