Distribution
Indo-West Pacific: east coast of Africa to Southeast Asia and the northern coasts of Australia. Also reported from Japan (Ref. 559) and New Caledonia (Ref. 5525). Recently invaded the eastern Mediterranean from the Red Sea through the Suez Canal.

Short description
Dorsal spines (total): 13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 7. Body elongate, with relatively large ctenoid scales. Color is silvery white, with a bright yellow horizontal band running through the eye to the caudal fin. Dorsal fins with 3-4 orange or red bars; anal and pelvic fin pale. Upper lobe of the caudal fin with 5-6 orange-black bars, lower lobe plain yellow with dark margin.
Biology
    Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)
Found in coastal waters with a muddy substrate. Forms large schools (Ref. 9987). Usually fast swimming with short stops to feed (Ref. 48636). Sold fresh in markets. Utilized for fish meal. Valued also for its roe (Ref. 9987).
