Etymology: Protomelas: Greek, protos = the first + Greek, melas, melanos = black (Ref. 45335).

Africa: Endemic to Lake Malawi. Previously, two subspecies were recognized: Protomelas marginatus marginatus (southern end of the lake) and Protomelas marginatus vuae (northern end of the lake).
